|Phyllis Browning, founder and CEO of Phyllis Browning Company, is recognized as one of San Antonio’s leading real estate brokers. After nearly a decade as a top producer with another local real estate company, Browning opened her own real estate firm in 1989 with five agents and a simple goal: to be the best real estate company in Texas. Since its inception, the company successfully expanded into multiple offices to serve the growth of greater San Antonio. Phyllis Browning Company relocated to its current Broadway office in 1991; opened a second office in the north central section of the city in 1996; opened the Farm and Ranch office (now Phyllis Browning Ranch Properties) in 2002; opened the Hill Country Office in Leon Springs in 2007; and opened the downtown Boerne Office in 2008. Today Phyllis Browning Company has over 200 agents and staff and is recognized as the 2014 Top Workplace of the Year by the San Antonio Express-News. In 1996, Browning was named the San Antonio Small Business Leader of the Year and was recognized by the San Antonio Business Journal as number one in residential real estate sales for San Antonio. In 2004, Browning was inducted to the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame and in 2005 she was inducted to the San Antonio Business Hall of Fame. In 2007, she was named outstanding volunteer fundraiser by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
Currently, Browning serves as Chair of the Development Board at UTHSCSA and serves on the Board of Trustees for the San Antonio Medical Foundation. She is a Trustee Emeritus at Trinity University, past chairman of the Trinity University Business Affiliates, and past vice chair on the 2001-2002 Board of Directors for the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. Browning was honored by receiving the Women’s Leadership Awards for 2011 celebrating San Antonio’s Outstanding Women Business Leaders.
Her other community service includes involvement in and support of the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation, Alamo Heights School Foundation, Alamo Public Telecommunications Council, Charity Ball Association, Junior League of San Antonio and ongoing contributions to KLRN, San Antonio Public Library Foundation, San Antonio Botanical Society, and the restoration of San Fernando Cathedral. She is a past board member of the Alamo Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, past Chairman of the Endowment Board for KLRN Television, past member of the TMI Board of Governors, and past member of the San Antonio Free Trade Alliance.
Browning is a native of San Antonio and a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to beginning her career in real estate in 1979, she taught in the North East and Alamo Heights school districts. She is married to James C. Browning. They have three children: John C. Browning, M.D., a renowned pediatric dermatologist at Texas Dermatology and Laser Specialists; Craig Browning, a successful agent with Phyllis Browning Company; and Jennifer Browning Shemwell, President of Phyllis Browning Company.
