Approximately 1,500 Acres OUT OF the Historic Gallagher Ranch
The North Pasture | Exceptional Wildlife - Remarkable Views - Texas Heritage:
Offered for sale is approximately 1,500 acres known historically as The North Pasture,a portion of the original Gallagher Ranch in the Texas Hill Country. Peter Gallagher,an Irish immigrant and civil engineer, was doing engineering work for the Mexican government in the 1800s,when Texas was still part of Mexico. According to the family’s history,he was paid in land by then-President Santa Anna. Before 1836,Gallagher selected approximately 10,000 acres of high limestone hills surrounding a long valley and the San Geronimo Creek for his original ranch, located approximately 25 miles from San Antonio. In the early years,a group of high, rugged hills, lower flatlands, and a spring-fed creek became known as The North Pasture of the original ranch.
The Landscape:
The property unfolds across a diverse landscape of rolling pastures, elevated hills and dramatic bluffs, with long-range views extending across the San Geronimo Valley toward San Antonio. From the higher elevations, the scale of the surrounding Hill Country comes fully into view, while the creek corridors below offer a striking contrast of mature trees, native habitat and flowing water. Sheep Creek curves its narrow, watery route through the pasture, while Indian Springs drizzles from the rocky hillside overlooking the creek and is marked on historical maps. From Rustler’s Lookout, breathtaking views extend across the countryside, with views toward Blue Heaven Mountain beyond. The landscape is defined by mature sycamore, elm, live oak and madrone trees, limestone hills, clear rock-bottomed creeks and springs that have shaped this land for generations.
Exceptional Wildlife Habitat:
The ranch supports abundant white-tailed deer and an impressive wild turkey population. Mature sycamores and other native trees along the creek provide nesting and roosting habitat for blue herons and numerous native and migratory bird species. Open pastures have historically supported cattle grazing, while the combination of wooded creek corridors, mature trees, springs and native cover creates exceptional habitat for hunting and wildlife management. Wild turkey roost in century-old oak trees, while game trails are shared by deer, coyote, jackrabbit and other native wildlife. Hawks and eagles move through the open skies, adding to the remarkable natural character of the property.
An Ancient Landscape:
Fossils can be found throughout portions of the property, offering evidence of the ancient marine environment that once covered this region of Texas. Fossilized shells are easily found embedded in the stone shelves throughout the pasture, providing tangible evidence of the land’s ancient beginnings. Areas overlooking the springs are also historically associated with Native American activity, adding another layer to the property’s connection to the land’s much earlier past. Arrowheads and chips of flint can be found near historic campfire areas, while ancient oaks shade the small springs.
A Ranch Shaped by Generations:
Long before Gallagher established his ranch,Native Americans crossed the creeks and lived among these hills, hunting deer, turkey and dove and drinking from the cool water of the springs. From the early days of cattle roundups, trail rides and cowboys, remnants of old horse trails can still be found crisscrossing the pasture. A rusted horseshoe half-buried in the soil serves as a reminder of the generations who have traveled this land. In the 1920s,the family of the current owners purchased Gallagher Ranch and continue to own and enjoy their part of this Texas treasure. The ranch was and is both sanctuary and community,a place that defines and shapes generations of family and guests.
A Sense of Place:
The North Pasture is a place where time curves around this space. One remembers the outline of its many hills against a copper sunset, the pale light creeping upward behind the eastern hills at sunrise, the muffled sound of raindrops on the dusty caliche road, the south breeze moving up Sheep Creek, the scent of cedar and the rustle of leaves among the sycamore and elm,the dark silhouette of heavy-limbed live oak and the gentle curve of the red-barked madrone. One’s relationship with a piece of land can be visceral, intense and creative. You say,“I own a place,a farm,a ranch…” but what you really mean is,“I belong to this place, this particular piece of land.” This is a place of long hikes and longer horseback rides, sunrise breakfasts and midnight Jeep drives, fishing ponds and ducks and doves flying. It is a place where hawks and eagles swoop through the air, where wild turkey keep century-old nests in the oaks, and where game trails wind through the hills.
