This Spanish-style home was built in 1927 and the home of Jacob Mendlovitz, owner of the historic Mendlovitz Department Store from 1923-1932 which stood in the downtown Schmidt Building. The home has seen different modifications over the years, one of which was the hand-dug basement from the 1960's, a feature rarely found in Texas homes. Decorative masonry arch ways were added in the living room and kitchen. The house was leveled in 2007 by Alamo Hy-Tech. A french drain has been added to maintain drainage away from the foundation, and functions well. Many features such as glass doorknobs, hardwood floors and built-in seating are original from 1927. Serene outdoor spaces included a courtyard with fountain in the front and spacious screened-in porch in the back. Main house 2/2 and casita 1/1 is located in the highly desirable downtown area. Although updated to reflect modern building codes, the beauty, character and warm charm of an older home will always remain.
